MUSEUM EVENING #7 / Collection Mania

2026-07-31 / 17:00
31 July / Friday

Is collecting a passion, a way of telling your story, or perhaps an attempt to turn back the clock? This evening, inspired by the exhibition ‘The Collector: Ignacy Korwin-Milewski’, we take a look at the remarkable story of one of the all-time most important Polish art collectors. In the exhibition space, we’ll talk about the tastes, dreams and choices that shape collections, and search for the works and objects we’d most want in our own ideal collection. During the course of the relaxed atmosphere of a Friday evening, we’ll discover just how easy it is to catch the collecting bug.

As always each month, we’ve also put together a creative zone, a music zone and an author event in the bookshop. And there’s more – you can test your knowledge in the museum quiz, take a collector personality test, and even have a retro commemorative photo taken with Ignacy Korwin-Milewski himself. Join us! Museum Evening – every last Friday of the month!

PROGRAMME

5:00pm – 8:00pm

Creative Zone / Main Hall
It’s time for some creative experimentation: stand in front of an easel with a mirror and try your hand as a self-portraitist. If you like, follow the guidelines of Ignacy Korwin-Milewski, who expected artists to meet certain conditions – they were to portray themselves against a dark background, in a standing position and holding objects linked to their profession in their hands. What objects would you choose to represent yourself?

All the materials are provided – no drawing experience necessary. Let’s get to work!

Q&A – Ask About Art / temporary exhibition ‘The Collector: Ignacy Korwin-Milewski
Throughout the evening, NMW educators will be on hand inside the exhibition to share stories about selected works, answer your questions and invite you to share your own observations. Look out for educators wearing ZAPYTAJ MNIE (ASK ME) badges and find out who this famous collector really was. Feel free to drop by at any point.

Music Zone / Main Hall
Come relax in the music zone, where we’ll travel back in time to the first half of the 20th century and listen to music from an extraordinary collection of vinyl records.

• Museum Personality Test: What type of collector are you? / Main Hall
What would you most want to add to your own collection, and why? Answer a few questions and discover what kind of art collector is hiding inside you!

• Photo Booth / outside the entrance to the temporary exhibition ‘The Collector: Ignacy Korwin-Milewski
Ever wanted to feel like a celebrity from a hundred years ago? Perhaps you’ve dreamt of making the front page? Step into our photo booth and have a commemorative picture taken in the style of a 19th-century magazine cover. It only takes a moment, and you’ll leave with a unique museum keepsake to take home. The photographs will be taken by the Magia Miasta team (@magiamiasta).

NMW Main Hall & temporary exhibition / admission with a ticket to the permanent galleries or to the temporary exhibition (Q&A) / join at any time / no advance booking required

6:00 pm
Look Down – a conversation about collecting with Kora Tea Kowalska / NMW Bookshop

Can objects found in the rubbish become valuable collector’s items? What stories are hidden in the objects featured in the author’s book Patrz pod nogi (Look Down)? Is collecting a ‘serious’ pursuit or merely a hobby? Our guest in the NMW Bookshop will be Kora Tea Kowalska – archaeologist, cultural studies scholar, academic lecturer and creator of the @odrzeczysklad Facebook and Instagram accounts. As a collector of discarded and unlikely objects, she will be our guide through a world in which we give value to things others have cast aside. The event will be hosted by Helena Postawka-Lech.

NMW Bookshop / admission with a museum ticket / join at any time / no advance booking required

8:00 pm
What do a museum, a puzzle booklet & a concept quiz have in common? / Main Hall

That’s right – it’s quiz time! After the puzzle booklet we put together with Zgadua and Concept Talerzykowy, it’s time to meet in person. Join us for a quiz with prizes, hosted by Concept creator Hania Pawlik-Sroczyńska. You’ll need to bring not only your art history knowledge but also anything you know about collecting, Ignacy Korwin-Milewski, his collections and city life. Come alone or in groups of up to five – this pop-up is best shared with friends.
