MUSEUM EVENING #9 / No Big Deal

2026-09-25 / 17:00
25 September / Friday

Join us for an evening inspired by the work of Adolph Menzel – an artist who observed the world with remarkable perceptiveness and captured his observations in drawings. Looking at his work together, we’ll explore the value of paying close attention and spotting the beauty hidden in small details.

Like every month, the programme includes: a music zone, art talks with NMW educators, and a creative zone where you can make your own pocket sketchbook. There’s also a quiz with prizes. To close out the evening, come watch Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon with us in the museum’s striking main hall.

Join us! Museum Evening – every last Friday of the month!

PROGRAMME

5:00pm – 8:00pm
• Creative Zone / Main Hall
Adolph Menzel drew constantly and was rarely without his sketchbook. In the Creative Zone this evening, you’ll make your own pocket sketchbook by hand. Take it with you and fill it with sketches, observations and ideas as you tour the exhibition and beyond. All materials provided. Get to work!

• Q&A – Ask About Art / exhibition “Adolph Menzel (1815–1905): The Tireless Observer”
Throughout the evening, NMW educators will be on hand inside the exhibition to share stories about selected works, answer your questions and invite you to share your own observations. Look out for educators wearing ZAPYTAJ MNIE (ASK ME) badges and discover the secrets of Adolph Menzel’s artistic techniques, his ways of observing the world, and his sources of inspiration. Feel free to drop by at any point.

• Music Zone / Main Hall
Hear classical and film music that’ll sharpen your senses and set a comfortable mood for close observation. The pieces, carefully selected by Łukasz Prokop, will also ease you into the unique atmosphere of Barry Lyndon.

NMW Main Hall & temporary exhibition / admission with a museum ticket or temporary exhibition ticket / drop in at any time / no advance booking required

8:15pm
Screening of Barry Lyndon, 1975, directed by Stanley Kubrick / Main Hall

An adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s 19th-century picaresque novel, telling the story of the rise and fall of a daring yet sensitive adventurer, the eponymous Barry Lyndon. After defeating an English officer in a duel, the handsome young Redmond Barry is forced to leave his native Ireland. He sets out on a journey across a Europe torn apart by the Seven Years’ War, deliberately climbing the rungs of the social ladder along the way. However, the years of intrigue, deception and following where chance leads him all culminate in tragedy.

Before the screening, Dr Piotr Borusowski, curator of “Adolph Menzel (1815–1905): The Tireless Observer”, will give a short talk about the film.

NMW Main Hall / approx. 180 min / admission with a museum ticket / no advance booking required / places limited
