Lesbian Imaginarium

Love and eroticism between women is a part of life and culture. Patriarchal society has for centuries condemned female homoeroticism to invisibility and sexual exploitation. However, art has produced a multitude of images throughout history. It is important to appreciate the female continuum from Antique vases through modern painting to contemporary art of the new media. Historical and mythical lesbian themes (Sappho, Diana, nymphs) are here juxtaposed with contemporary photography and videos produced by artists, some of whom identify as lesbians. The historical works serve as a point of reference for contemporary women’s art. These representations include scenes of love and friendship between women, female portraits and nudes, lesbian icons and lesbian pioneers, and uncanny images of the female body.
