Archive

The Archive presents film and theatre posters advertising works by prominent homosexual directors, playwrights, and artists. The posters span from the 1950 to the present. The posters advertise films by Jean Cocteau, Luchino Visconti, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, John Schlesinger, Derek Jarman, Gus van Sant, and Pedro Almodóvar, and plays by Christopher Marlowe, Jean Genet, Tony Kushner, and Wojciech Misiuro. The posters were designed by leading representatives of the Polish school of poster art. The advertised films and plays were all milestones stirring moral and artistic controversy, and many of them concerned sexuality. Most of the posters were produced before 1989 in the People’s Republic of Poland when a metaphorical style flourished under censorship. Behind the Iron Curtain, Polish poster artists had to find ways to advertise cult masterpieces of the Western sexual revolution, which did not have much following in Poland.
