Numismatic Collection

Beginning with the earliest coin issues from ancient Greece, Rome, and Byzantium (the rare set of Byzantine lead seals included) and progressing through the medieval period in Europe, the modern numismatics collection expands in scope to include other continents. Of especial interest are shell coins, inscription-free single-sided coins from Germany, ducats, commemorative thalers, and the beautiful thaler multiples.

The Polish numismatic collection presents a review of coinage from the earliest coin issues by Bolesław Chrobry (Bolesław the Brave) to contemporary times. These items are impressive not only on account of the sheer beauty of the valuable material used for the gold donatives and ducats, but also of the skill invested in their making. Also notable for its academic as well as aesthetic value is the collection of Silesian coins.

The medals assembled in the National Museum of Warsaw collection provide insights to the history of Poland and other countries, as captured in miniature by the finest medallists. Of the holdings of the sphragistics department, one could mention the body of 19th century brass casts of medieval seals.

For the banknotes, the National Museum in Warsaw preserves a valuable collection of treasury bills from the Kościuszko Rising and from the Congress Kingdom. As regards more recent history, there is a collection of banknotes and coupons used in the Łódź ghetto. Among foreign banknotes, there is an almost complete collection of all consecutive American dollar issues.

For the moment being, the Numismatic Collection does not have a permanent display space; accordingly, its holdings are made available for general viewing only within the context of temporary exhibitions.
