Ancient Art Collection

The Ancient Art Collection, comprising a total of approximately 17,000 objects, is kept in three storage spaces (sorted into Egyptian artefacts, ancient ceramics, and stone items). Approximately 1,500 items are on display in the Museum’s galleries; most of the remaining objects (many of which have survived only in fragments) are less suited for exhibition. Most of the Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek, and Etruscan items suitable for display to the general public are on show, as is a portion of our rich Cypriot collection (ceramic wares, stone and terracotta figurines) given to our Museum in return for the excavation work at Nea Paphos. The collection of inscriptions from Braniewo and a variety of fine Roman items (including sarcophagi, urns, portraits, and a beautiful collection of glassware) remain in storage pending the completion of refurbishment work in the Hall of Bronzes, where items from Imperial Rome are to be exhibited. At the present moment, a small selection of Roman objects is on display in the central room of the side passage. We would also like the Hall of Bronzes to become the site of a Roman portrait gallery (including portraits on coins), and we hope to reconstruct Poland’s only exhibit of ancient inscriptions.
