Aleksander Gierymski 1850–1901

2014-03-20 - 2014-08-10

20 March – 10 August 2014

With this exhibition of works by one of the most accomplished Polish painters of the second half of the 19th century, our Museum proudly resumes its tradition of presenting works by artists associated with Warsaw. This is the most comprehensive presentation of Aleksander Gierymski’s works in 76 years, and it marks the completion of a certain cycle for our institution – it was with an Aleksander Gierymski exhibition that the National Museum in Warsaw launched its operations at its new seat in Aleje Jerozolimskie, at the complex at which it based to this day.

The Warsaw exhibition is part of the Gierymski Brothers project – a joint undertaking of the National Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Krakow. The project will include Aleksander Gierymski 1850–1901, the National Museum in Warsaw exhibition shown at its main building between 20 March and 10 August 2014 and Maksymilian Gierymski. Works, Inspiration, Reception, an exhibition prepared by the National Museum in Krakow and shown at its main building between 25 April and 10 August 2014. Taken together, these two events provide a unique occasion to consider the oeuvres of the Gierymski brothers separately and in tandem, in terms of their mutual relationship and their contributions to art. The Krakow presentation of works by Maksymilian Gierymski (1846–1874) comes at the 140th anniversary of his untimely death from tuberculosis; while Maksymilian and the younger Aleksander were lauded as the creators of modern Polish art already in the 19th century, these days, Maksymilian Gierymski is familiar to only a narrow circle of experts and admirers.
